Dental implants

Perhaps because of excessive tooth decay, breakage or orthodontic treatment you may need to have one or more teeth extracted.

The resulting gap may have unfavourable consequences:

  • Adjacent teeth may change position to fill the gap
  • The loss of the tooth root may cause your jawbone to shrink (making your face appear prematurely older)
  • Multiple extractions on the side may affect your bite
  • A gap in the front teeth may look unsightly.

Your options would be a removable denture, a fixed bridge or implants.

An implant is, in essence, an artificial tooth root which provides a strong and permanent base for a realistic, fixed porcelain tooth. It can also provide a firm base for removable dentures, making them more secure and comfortable. Implants hold a crown, bridge or denture just like roots hold natural teeth in place.

Dental implants can give you a more attractive smile. They will also provide you with security and put you at ease at work and at play. They are strong, permanent and look and feel very natural. Implants are usually only available privately (source http://www.nhs.uk).

What’s Involved

Implant treatment is normally in two stages:

In the first stage the implant (a small titanium post) is gently placed in the jawbone under local anaesthetic. Over the next few weeks the bone gradually grows around and bonds with the post providing stability. Unlike a traditional plate or bridge, the dental implant is actually anchored to your jaw giving it great strength.

Once integration with the jawbone is complete we can move on to the second stage: attaching the crown, bridge or denture to the implant. Implants can be used in the replacement of single or multiple teeth; or to stabilise or replace dentures.
